ADULT ILLITERACY
Russell’s Story with Stellar Reading Center
“Going to school was very hard for me, I was basically put in Special Ed classes and pushed through.”
Going to school was very hard for me, I was basically put in Special Ed classes and pushed through. I knew that something was wrong, but I didn’t know what it was or how to ask for help. I was embarrassed to ask my teacher anything, because it was more comfortable for me to be quiet and hope that I would go unnoticed. When I graduated, I knew that I was basically a non-reader. This has slowed me down a lot. I have struggled getting jobs because I couldn’t read a job application. When I would try to apply for a job and tell them that I couldn’t read, no one said anything. They would just look at me, and that was embarrassing. It tears you down. I really wanted to attend college, but I didn’t have the confidence to do so. Again, I was too embarrassed. I decided that maybe I could join the Army, but I couldn’t read any of the questions, although I did pass the math part of the admittance form. Not only has my career been affected, but socially it has also been very difficult. I have always avoided any situation where I may have to read, and that pretty much means any social gathering, including church. I couldn’t even read a menu. I liked to go where there were numbers on the board for the food, that way I could just say a number. Eventually, I was led to Sylvan Learning Center where I was diagnosed with dyslexia, but they couldn’t help me with any of their programs. I finally had a reason behind my struggles. At some point my wife Amanda told me about Stellar Reading Center, where my cousin Fanesia happened to be a Tutor for people with dyslexia. I started tutoring sessions with Stellar Reading Center and I had no idea just how awesome tutoring was going to be and that it would help me so much! I now have more confidence in reading and really hope to attend college one day. Stellar Reading Center has been a life changer for me.

“Because of the work of Stellar Reading Center, we are able to help more adults in our program that have struggled with reading and writing. There are many adults in our community that need this resource. A lot of them are too embarrassed to admit they cannot read but if there was a center that was focused on adult illiteracy, I believe that they would see they are not alone. It would be encouraging to know that they are not forgotten or too old to learn how to read. It is a cornerstone of our daily lives and everyone should be afforded the opportunity to learn.”
